When it comes to most characters' appearances, it's tough to tell what period in history they are come from, because they don't really age with time. Most scenes lack emotional depth which make it tough for one to connect with a character or feel invested in the show. The action cutting across timelines is often disturbing and you feel like a scene is cut off just when it was about to get a little interesting. Otherwise, it fails to grip you as a viewer. If you're a history enthusiast, you are likely to find the show mildly interesting, that is if you manage to survive the first two to three episodes. Some episodes feel too long, especially those with dance and music. Moreover, the antiquated, melodramatic dialogue delivery kills the show.

The series does excel when it comes to beautifully-crafted, sets and gorgeous period costumes but it loses out in VFX, storytelling and prosthetics. All one can do is appreciate the makers for a sincere attempt at exploring a new genre in the Indian OTT space. Writer of the series Bhavani Iyer has penned Black and Guzaarish with the filmmaker while AM Turaz credited for dialogues and lyrics in The Empire, has closely worked with SLB too. Mitakshara has been an AD on Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani. And you can't really blame the team for that overpowering Bhansali style. In fact, it tries to ape Sanjay Leela Bhansali. While The Empire easily looked like India’s attempt at Game of Thrones, it is nothing close to it. Other key characters include Naved Aslam as the treacherous Qamnar Ali, Aditya Seal as the young Humayun and Aayam Mehta as eunuch Aitbaar who also Khanzada's confidante. Babur’s wives (played by Sahher Bambba and Toranj Kavyon) are only seen adding to stress on the domestic front. Dhami who largely has a soap opera background fails to make an impact with her dialogues. One shouldn't be surprised to see countless memes being generated on Morea's Shaybani.ĭrashti Dhami plays Babur’s beloved sister Khanzada who is willing to sacrifice herself to ensure Babur remains on the throne. Even Shaybani's room resembles that of Khilji's in Padmaavat. He is often seen laughing like a maniac after mercilessly committing cruel acts.

When it comes to Dino Morea's character Muhammad Shaybani Khan, it seems like the director has taken a lot of inspiration for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Khilji who enjoys murder and torture. Perhaps, she is the only one who leaves a powerful impression on you. Azmi is a strong woman in a patriarchal world and has a certain aura about her that makes you want to respect and look up to her character. During his formative years, Babur is seen pretty dependent on his grandmother Esan Dawlat (Shabana Azmi). Imaad Shah plays Babur’s confidante Qasim while Rahul Dev plays his loyal lieutenant and father figure Wazir Khan. Kapoor does cut an impressive figure as Babur. You witness him in the war ground where swords are bathed in blood as well as inside the palace where mind games rule. As Babur, Kunal Kapoor is gentle yet ruthless. The first episode begins with Babur as a 14-year-old boy who is a sensitive individual yet doesn’t shy away from slaughtering people when his kingdom and position are in danger.
